What does "loess" mean?
Loess: A quaternary deposit, usually consisting of a fine yellowish earth, on the banks of the Rhine and other large rivers. LOEVEN'S LARVA Loev"en's lar"va. Etym: [Named after the Swedish zoölogist, S. F. Löven, who discovered it.] (Zoöl.) The peculiar larva of Polygordius. See Polygordius.
