What does "impedimenta" mean?

Impedimenta: Things which impede or hinder progress; incumbrances; baggage; specif. (Mil.), the supply trains which must accompany an army. On the plains they will have horses dragging travoises, dogs with travoises, women and children loaded with impedimenta. Julian Ralph.
